PHPIO's 'Green Initiative' The province of Ontario tabled legislation that will focus on renewable energy, energy conservation and creating a new, green economy. The Provinces Green Energy Act manages to address some very important issues. If passed, the legislation will streamline the environmental assessment process for renewable energy projects, ensuring that local by-laws do not stand in the way of renewable energy projects. Also included in the Act are incentive programs, assistance for low income Ontarians and a requirement to label the Energy Efficiency of all homes at time of sale. Mandatory energy auditing was proposed by Ottawa-Orléans MPP Phil McNeely when he introduced Bill 101 last September. BuyWise Energy Consultants Inc. and the Professional Home and Property Inspectors of Ontario (PHPIO) have joined forces to offer EcoENERGY home audits across Ontario. Beginning in March 2009, PHPIO members wishing to enter this field will have the opportunity be trained and integrated into this program. This will provide a one stop approach for consumers wishing to schedule a home inspection and home energy assessments, ensuring quality and consistency across every region of Ontario. Since the Province is considering mandatory energy efficiency for resale residences through the Green Energy Act, we felt a responsibility to ensure that appropriate numbers of experienced, well trained individuals were in place to meet the demand. Home energy audits are an extremely effective way of supporting an environmentally friendly lifestyle and reducing utility bills at the same time. It is also creating revenue alternatives for a group that will be among the first affected by any economic slowdown.
